World-record intensity in attosecond hard-X-ray pulses could unlock closer study of electrons in atoms and molecules
Researchers at the European XFEL have generated attosecond hard-X-ray pulses with record intensity and fluence, focusing flashes lasting about 300 attoseconds to a spot just 180 by 330 nanometres using an advanced Kirkpatrick-Baez mirror system. Amplified spontaneous emission in a copper foil independently confirmed peak intensities above 10^20 watts per square centimetre.
