Electrical sliding switches graphene between magnetic states
Cornell researchers found that applying voltage to a four-layer graphene stack slides the layers between atomic stacking arrangements, reversibly switching the material between nonmagnetic and magnetic states. The effect, reported in Nature Nanotechnology, exploits weak van der Waals bonds rather than breaking chemical bonds, and the resulting state persists after voltage is removed.

Coal-derived carbon nanodots enable next-generation 2D electronics
Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and NETL have shown that carbon nanodots derived from bituminous coal can serve as an atomic-scale interfacial binder for integrating high-κ dielectrics with 2D semiconductors such as molybdenum disulfide.
